Safe, Affordable Housing for Older Adults and Disabled

Sea Island’s Comprehensive Health Care Corporation’s Rural Housing Program is a specialized program of housing and related services for
the handicapped and elderly citizens of Charleston County and the surrounding areas.

It features new one-story, and one and two bedroom rental units that are barrier free, in a rural environment, clustered around a community center for common dining, recreation, and arts and crafts. Health services are available at the Sea Island Comprehensive Health Care Corporation’s John’s Island Clinic which is immediately next door.

It is for individuals and families with disabling handicaps or for those 62 years of age or older. While preference for the housing will be given to residents of the five Sea Islands of Charleston County (James, John’s, Wadmalaw, Yonges, and Edisto), the housing will be available to anyone residing in the greater Charleston area.

Special Services Include:

• Medical and Dental services available through the Franklin C. Fetter Clinic
• Special Nutrition services available through the Senior Citizens Nutrition Program
• Arts, Crafts and other recreational services at the Community Center on regular basis
• Individual Social Services and Counseling
• Off-Site Trips to shopping and recreation areas
• Emergency Medical transportation will be available

Rent Subsidy
Rents for these specially designed living units for the handicapped and elderly would be beyond the reach of most citizens in the Charleston area. Persons with low incomes can qualify for rent subsidy, bringing their total rent and utilities to no more than twenty-five percent of monthly income. Most rural residents on the islands can qualify for this assistance.
