The hands of caregivers make a world of difference

The Family Caregiver Support Program was established in the year 2000 as part of the Older Americans Act. Congress recognized that many caregivers face a substantial financial burden in caring for their loved ones and allocated funding to provide caregiver support services. The program provides five (5) services to caregivers who are providing in home care to someone, age 60 or older, with functional deficits and/or to caregivers who are age 60 or older, caring for a child, age 18 or younger.

The Family Caregiver Support Program Provides:

• Information about resources available to assist in locating services from private organizations;
• Assistance to families in locating services;
• Caregiver training, peer support, and counseling to help families cope with the emotional and physical stresses associated with caring for a loved one;
• Financial assistance for respite care in the caregiver’s home or temporarily in a private facility; and
• Supplemental services to assist the caregivers with supplies needed to care for their loved ones.

Who is the “client” in the program?

• Unpaid caregivers caring for persons age 60 or older with functional disabilities, or
• A person age 60 or older caring for a child age 18 years or younger.

“There are only four kinds of people in the world – those who have been caregivers, those who currently are caregivers, those who will be caregivers, and those who need caregivers.”
~ Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter
